How do you connect to your macs from XP machine on same network? - Black - 07-31-2009
I wanted to see if I could survive XP for a bit on this mini 10v-- can't seem to figure out how to find other computers on the network-- there are a few files I'd like to grab. I've tried all the options that look remotely likely. Is there something I need to do from the mac end of things?

I thought a mini 10V did not have XP. Do you like the machine?
Never mind - I am looking at dell site now. Reading all over the net has me confused about these systems.
I am looking at getting a net book.

I do like it.
It seems to be a lot of computer for the price I paid ($271 plus shipping).

Turn on "SMB" sharing from the Mac's "File Sharing" options in the Sharing pref pane.
Sometimes Mac shares don't show up in XP's network.
At these times it may be necessary to enter the Mac's IP address directly.
I've found also that installing Apple's Bonjour can be a big help.

I installed Bonjour (it gave me a choice of repair or uninstall-- I think iTunes already installed it)-- if it's something you're supposed to launch or access I can't figure out how. Nothing different about what's showing up. Turned on SMB. Same.
Ran some sort of network setup wizard, restarting . . .

Still can't seem to get anywhere.
The best I can do is to move files from my macbook to the mini from my iMac (does this actually route the data through the iMac or is it a direct transfer?)

Ever since I installed Leopard, I haven't been able to see the PCs on my home/office network, and vice-versa.

Well, there's your problem. SMB sharing is broken in XP Home. It only works intermittently at best.
As I recall, the advice from MS was to upgrade to Pro.
Anyway, you can try this...
First, check to make sure that the clocks on your Mac and the PC show the same time. Yes, I'm serious.
Then make sure the Windows firewall is disabled.

Enable the Guest account in the User Accounts control panel under XP.
You're running 10.5 on the Mac(s), right? 'Cause the next step requires 10.5... Make a new user account with NO PASSWORD. Go into your Sharing pref's; check off File Sharing; add a shared folder (I'd make a new folder at the root level of my HD for testing purposes) and then click on the Options button; enable sharing via SMB; check the On-box for your new user and when prompted LEAVE THE PASSWORD BOX EMPTY.
(Why? XP Home chokes on SMB passwords and this way you're not messing with or exposing a "good" user account.)
...Now go to My Network places under XP and see if your Mac sharepoint turns up.

If that doesn't work then I suggest enabling simple file sharing under Win XP and connecting to the XP volume from your Macs to exchange files.
...Or just use Dropbox.
