Buying used on Amazon. Chances of getting hosed? - BernDog - 08-02-2009

I'm looking at making my first used purchase on Amazon, and it's from a seller listed as "Just Launched". I've bought other items from 3rd party sellers before, but they've been from mega-sellers with thousands of sales and a good rating so I wasn't worried.

The item I'm looking at is going for a fairly competitive price compared to Ebay, and it's not a high-ticket item ($60). However, I'd still like to get it and not get screwed.

Anyone have any experience with how Amazon deals with sales gone wrong, in case I need to deal with that?

I bought small items (books) and never had a problem

a friend bought a "new" camera (Pentax k200d, about $500) from a seller in canada, and it arrived with batteries already installed and the package was not sealed, so it was definitely used. he sent it back and it took about 4 weeks, but then he got his money back (including shipping).

Amazon supposedly backs up purchases from all third party sellers with their A to Z guarantee.

Having sold and bought on Amazon Marketplace, I can tell you that they will snatch that money back for you with a quickness if you lodge a complaint.

Caveat emptor.

Maybe they've change.

I ordered a Prison Break Season I DVD set from an online seller. Even though it was advertised as a USA version, it was Chinese. Worst yet, it would only play on my Mac. Couldn't use it a standard DVD player, so I couldn't watch the show while I worked out.

When I complained to Amazon.com, they told me they would refund but basically threatened to withdraw my ability to return used goods even I continued with my request. Since this was a $20 item, and I thought that I might need to retain protection, I ate the loss.

I would be very careful with a newly-launched seller.
