The hummingbirds have arrived! - DaviDC. - 08-02-2009 This morning I saw a single female hummingbird checking out the feeders in my backyard. Later she returned & drank from all 4 & seems to have already found a favorite. Last summer I was covered up with 'em from August to the middle of October. I want to get at least one more feeder & place it outside the window next to my computer. Re: The hummingbirds have arrived! - vicrock - 08-02-2009 Ours up here in WA are pretty much gone - they arrive in March and depart in July - I'm only seeing 2 or 3 any more Re: The hummingbirds have arrived! - SDGuy - 08-02-2009 See the green ones around here all the time, but yesterday saw an iridescent blue one for the first time - wish I had a camera with me - it was a bit startling to see one with that coloring. Re: The hummingbirds have arrived! - vision63 - 08-02-2009 Try not to get stabbed by one. Re: The hummingbirds have arrived! - JEBB - 08-02-2009 Where are you? Re: The hummingbirds have arrived! - Fred_Also - 08-02-2009 We have had them since June. At least 3 families of them. We have 3 feeders up and there is one or two coming in every 10 to 15 minutes to drink. They fight all the time. One seems to think that they can take over a feeder and that it becomes theirs. They bounce into one anther in flight trying to claim their territory. According to what I read they leave here last of Aug. to middle of Sept. to migrate south. We are in north Texas 125 mi. NW of Dallas. Between Dallas and Amarillo. Fred Also Re: The hummingbirds have arrived! - Don C - 08-03-2009 In March, I start watching the hummingbird migration northward at http://www.hummingbirds.net/map.html which indicates that they arrive in the area in March. I don't usually see them until July, and true to form, it has been just the last week or two that they've come to the feeder at a time when I see them. I have any number of plants that they like so some of the time they may be at the plants instead of the feeders. It's hard to know just when they leave but it won't be for a few weeks yet. I've watched the fights and territorial protection but one time several years ago I did have five hovering at one time. I guess the dominant bird was elsewhere that day. Re: The hummingbirds have arrived! - GeneL - 08-03-2009 We have four 16 oz Aspects HummZinger Excel Hummingbird Feeders ![]() We're fortunate in that we have Anna's ![]() ![]() ![]() They're really amazing to watch, especially when they have their aerial “dogfights” over territory. Re: The hummingbirds have arrived! - Kate - 08-03-2009 While at Ghost Ranch, we had 8 feeders and at least 30 birds a day. My favorite feeder is one that suction cups to the window, allowing extreme closeups. $10. at Ace Hardware, well worth the $ ![]() to see other close up photos, go to this entry on my blog http://cholulared.blogspot.com/2009/07/again-hummingbirds.html We've moved on, but the hummingbirds have found us once again, hooray! Kate Re: The hummingbirds have arrived! - OWC Jamie - 08-03-2009 I've never had much luck with feeders. Follow all the recomendations including refreshing and cleanliness. Maybe too many flowers around, that's where I see them. |
