Can't Copy .pdf files from a CD - Suggestions? - MitchJi - 08-02-2009
Hi,
I purchased a set of 2 CD's that contain .pdf files. The following are excerpts from the Readme.txt file on Disk 1:
Quick Start: Run (double click) the Setup program on Disc #1.
This copies the PDF files to a folder on your hard disk.
(The files take less than 900 mB of space, but the installer
will take a while to work.)
The discs are supposed to be usable on both Mac's and PC's (I removed the minimum configurations):
From the Adobe website - these are minimum system requirements to run
Acrobat 6.0. Acrobat performs much better on faster machines with
more RAM memory:

-MacIntosh-
The Setup program didn't work so I manually copied the .pdf files from the first disc (about 300 files totaling about 600 MB) without any problems.
I have only been able to copy one or two files (10 or more tries) from the second CD.
The finder normally generate an error message and then the copy continues to run with a message like the following until I reboot:
"copied 15.2 MB of 15.2 MB" .
I also tried ditto and cp.
This is the cp command and results:
cd /Volumes/Disk2/Files
cp cp Support.pdf /Volumes/Slow/SB_SS_Temp
cp: Support.pdf: Input/output error
The cd's are formatted as "ISO 9660 (Rockridge)".
Did I just get a bad CD (the pdf's look OK with the "ls -l" command and in the finder)?
Anything else I can try?

Try it in a different Mac or with a different optical drive.
Sometimes very minor differences in firmware or focus or angle of the laser can make huge differences in the ability of a drive to read a disc with scratches or soft sectors.

Yes. Some sticky residue that I washed off and its working perfectly (I feel a little foolish).

Remember next time that if you can get them open, just Save (as) the docs to your HD. A long process if there are a lot of them, but better than nothing at all.
Also.... are these porn? Because if they are, we don't want to hear any more detail about the 'so-called'
"residue."
