Question for my fellow desert-dwellers: scorpions, what do YOU do about them? - Stephanie - 08-10-2009

I've lived in the southwest for over 25 years and until last year, I'd NEVER given scorpions a thought. I have never heard of them inhabiting the town I live in. My bf lives an hour away and last year, he found a live scorpion in the bedroom. I didn't even know his town had them! Since then, he's discovered one other live one and a dead one on the living room floor. What I found to be even more disturbing is that when we upgraded some lighting fixtures, we found some dead scorpions in the fixtures we took down. That completely creeped me out. Every time I set foot in his house, I can't help but think of them.

I think I've developed a bit of a fear of them. I know the ones we have around here wouldn't cause life-threatening injuries but I'd still rather not encounter any. So my question for other desert dwellers on the forum is - how do you avoid scorpions? What's the best way to keep them out of the house? Any scorpion avoidance advice is greatly appreciated.

Someone here, I think it was mjkramer, emailed me with a very cute video of the cat belonging to his daughter (katkramer I think), who (the cat, not katkramer!) was a Certified Scorpion Killer™. Unfortunately, that solution probably isn't going to work for you, since you're allergic to the fuzzies. Big Grin

Yeah, unfortunately cats would not work for me. I'd probably prefer scorpions to cats Sad

That brings up an interesting question though...I wonder what our dogs would do with scorpions.

Wait one doggone minute. You're crazy for snakes but don't like scorpions. My reptile/arthropod loving son would be very disappointed in your attitude. :poke:

I'm also waiting for the MRF solutions on this one as well. We've found a few (four) in our house this year.
Wife found 1 in the toilet.
Potential ouch!

Come on gang, solve our problems.

Indeed I sent you the video. Diesel, her cat, would first bite the stinger off and then play with the scorpion until it was dead. It never was stung that I know of.

I live in the Texas Hill Country just outside New Braunfels in the middle of five rocky, wooded acres. We normally have a scorpion in the house from time to time, but with the current severe drought we are seeing a lot of them as they are coming in for water and the insects that they eat. I stepped on one barefoot recently and received a mild sting. Put ice on it and took a Benadryl and it soon stopped hurting. We have a Terminix pest control contract and they say there is no poison that is effective on scorpions, just kill the bugs they feed on and they will go away. They recently put out some sticky traps that have caught a few.

Make soup! http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/wml/naturalworld/bughouse/scorpionsoup.aspx

Scorpion soup

Ingredients

½ cup vegetable oil
30-40 live scorpions, washed
125g fresh pork
1 large garlic bulb, crushed
fresh ginger root, about 3cm, chopped
salt and pepper
½ litre water
1 handful dried Chinese dates
1 handful dried red berries
1 large carrot, sliced
Preparation

Heat the oil in a large wok. Stir-fry the scorpions for 20 seconds. Add the pork, garlic, salt and pepper. Stir-fry briefly, then add the water slowly. Add the other ingredients and simmer on a low heat for 40 minutes.

I grew up in South Texas and we had scorpions come in the house all of the time. I 've been stung on more than one occasion, but it's not like it's serious.

Mjgkramer has the best advice - take away their food (bugs) and they have no reason to be around.

They hide under stuff like boards, branches and rocks, reduce their cover near your house.
