best take-apart guide for MacBook Pro (early '08)? - tahoedrew - 08-13-2009

About to pull the stock 200GB HD out of my early '08 MBP and insert a new, 500GB HD... stoked to have all the extra room as I was down to just 6GB of space and programs were not shutting down properly or just locking up and crashing.

Where's the best take-apart guide?

Thanks,
~A

Just did a similar upgrade. very simple, just a matter of keeping track of screws.

One thing that's unnecessary in that guide (from an HD upgrade standpoint) is they tell you to remove the keyboard cable so you can disconnect the upper case. If you're only upgrading the HD, the upper case ribbon cable should be long enough so you can just rest it against the display. Unlike the powerbooks, where the analogous cable was only a couple inches long.

You can use the sections of an ice cube tray to separate the screws. The first time you take the case apart--it is tense, but it will finally let go. Be careful when you try to cajole the case apart in the front.

Thanks everyone. All went well, I actually printed out the ifixit.com guide and just put screws on top of the photos where applicable. Everything went smoothly except I forgot to reapply the tape that's over top of the sleep light and IR sensor connectors, the thing is that the ribbon cable has a sticky backing on it anyways.

I'm currently doing a fresh install of the OS and then I'll install all my apps from scratch as necessary.

Nice that you had the discipline to work it through. ifixit is a treasure but only for laptops. A site like that for other Macs would be a great resource.

I also discovered that the 200GB HD that was stock was actually a 7200RPM hard drive. I think the specs list it as a 5400RPM HD but I'm guessing, since it was a refurb and I got it the day the unibodies were announced, they only had 7200RPM 200GB versions.
