A few questions about Elgato Hybrid and EyeTV software (2.5.3 vs 3.x) - tahoedrew - 08-13-2009 I just got my 2009 Elgato Hybrid (I have the first Hybrid which lacked a QAM tuner and an FM tuner, both features being enough to convince me to upgrade). First off, anyone ever gotten a DOA Hybrid. When you install and run the 2.5.3 software the setup wants you to connect your device before continuing at one point. Well, it recognizes the older Hybrid but not the new one. That leads to my second and third questions... Does the 2009 Hybrid only work with the 3.0 software? If so, can you have both software packages installed on the same machine? I've heard mixed reviews about the 3.0 software so I figured I'd just stick with 2.5.3 for the meantime since it's stable and has never given me trouble. Maybe I have to install 3.0 software for the new hybrid which will kind of dissapoint me, given you have to eventually pay for the "guide" info in that software I've heard. Thanks for any advice... ~A Re: A few questions about Elgato Hybrid and EyeTV software (2.5.3 vs 3.x) - gabester - 08-13-2009 I may be mistaken if memory misserves, but the ElGato Hybrid with QAM was introduced with EyeTV 3 so there may not be any support/drivers for it in earlier versions. I know that in later versions of 3 they switched to the official "TV Guide" and that costs money, but is there still a free guide option? I haven't upgraded past 3.0.3 because of this - if I'm going to have to pay a subscription I'd rather just get a TiVo. g= Re: A few questions about Elgato Hybrid and EyeTV software (2.5.3 vs 3.x) - STL - 08-13-2009 I've not upgraded from 3.04 because, as I understand it, I would be forced to the pay "guide" system from the free TitanTV guide system. My memory is that the TitanTV service will be going away at the end of 2009. With the pay "guide" system you get 1 year free, then to continue having a guide you have to pay about $20/year. Overall I'm happy with the Hybrid. Using my G5/2GHz and 23" LCD display I have excellent picture quality. My original plans were to get familiar with the system, then buy a flatscreen TV and MacMini, upgrade my cable and use the Hybrid with EyeTV software as a DVR. IMHO the EyeTV software and in particular, the capability with the supplied remote controller, needs to be more user friendly to accommodate all those currently comfortable using a remote TV controller. The replacement seemed to work but ran so hot its days were surely numbered. That was replaced promptly too. Email them. |
