VHS to HD? - Rolando - 08-13-2009 Any of the video cams take an analog signal and upconvert to HD? I'd like to import the VHS into HD, then downsample to SD. Does that make sense? I guess it would be akin to recording an 8 track tape to CD? Re: VHS to HD? - clay - 08-13-2009 Is there a reason you don't want to go directly to SD? Re: VHS to HD? - Doc - 08-13-2009 > I'd like to import the VHS into HD, then > downsample to SD. Does that make sense? No. What's the point? Why not simply copy your VHS video to DVD? Re: VHS to HD? - Lew Zealand - 08-13-2009 VHS *is* SD. Just do a 640x480 videocapture and you will get all the information available on your VHS tapes. Re: VHS to HD? - modelamac - 08-13-2009 Analog digitally converted will still not be HD. You need HD quality on the original, which you don't have. The end product be it oh your hard drive or on DVD will be digital, but the quality will be the same as on the VHS tape. It will play on HD TVs and DVD players, but will not be HD. Re: VHS to HD? - Rolando - 08-13-2009 I understand that it will never be HD. Again, I thought to capture in HD and then downsample. When I see VHS captured to SD, it goes from fuzzy to blocky. I'm thinking that if I did VHS to HD to SD it would stay fuzzy. Re: VHS to HD? - Lew Zealand - 08-13-2009 It all depends on the quality of your converter and the bitrate you set. If it's blocky, it sounds like your bitrate is set too low. I set 2hr/DVD (~5Mbit/sec) as my rate (a bit overkill for VHS) and my images are as good as the original VHS. And a 2-hr movie fits on 1 DVD. My conversion stream is less than ideal though I've worked on the process for 2 years and now I'm getting maximum quality all the way through.
