I'm thinking of getting something for our girl. She watches her nano intently but won't use headphones. This would give her a larger screen, sound and MANY more options for movies by adding an SD card.

That's netbook territory, pricewise.

Re: anyone try this video player? - bazookaman - 09-18-2009

thats true enough. but a netbook is a little more than i want. It needs to play movies. Thats it. I'd gladly settle for something cheaper that would have similar functionality. I just haven't found it yet.

Pick up a used PSP. Plays movies and is expandable.

What about a used iPod Touch? Or the new Archos 5: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-12519_7-10353176-49.html http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001D0E4DA/ref=asc_df_B001D0E4DA912167?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=googlecom09c9-20&linkCode=asn&creative=380341&creativeASIN=B001D0E4DA

I like the PSP idea. I thought of a Touch, but they are too much for the space they have with no expandability. The Archos is WAY too expensive too. Although it looks nice.

That's $165. For $199 you can get her the real thing--the 8 GB iPod touch.

The Cowon's screen is slightly larger but it has lower resolution than the iPod's screen.

The PSP screen has lower resolution than that of the iPod. Also, you should be aware of this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_Portable
"On release, an issue with interlacing was noticed on the PSP-3000 screen when objects were in motion...Sony announced that they would not be releasing a software update to address the issue"

The PSP-3000 is about the same price as the iPod touch.

You love her so get her something she will value.

That is true. And I've looked at that. However the cowon offers 2 things the touch doesn't. The ability to play all her movies WITHOUT reconverting them to ipod format and have 2 versions of each. All my movies now are AVI so they play on my eyehome. And the touch won't play AVIs so i would have to convert them. The cowon will play AVIs. Also, the most important thing about the cowon that is lacking on the touch is expandability. With the touch I'm stuck with 8gb (the amount on her nano that is filled already) With the cowon I have the ability to put another 16gb of movies onto a SD card and be on our way.

edit: And another thing. Does the touch have speaker(s)? I didn't think it did so you would need headphones. Our girl has them for her ipod but she doesn't like wearing them. Which is another reason i wanted something that she could listen to w/o headphones. (Yes, she watches movies on her ipod with no sound).
