Not to be alarming, but my mom is having a health issue - SteveO - 09-22-2009 Dad just called and said my mom is having a tough time the past few days remembering recent events (as in, she doesn't remember at all)...phone conversations from yesterday, conversations with him today, even an out-of-town trip to see relatives last week. She is only 64. I told him to call her family doctor and ask them what to do, i.e., they'd give a referral to I'm guessing maybe a neuro (?) person who can run CTs, MRIs, etc. I stressed (calmly) to get this call in today and that if he didn't get some traction within 24 hours, then we'd figure out who else to call. I know this could be something very simple and treatable, or maybe not. I am hoping and praying for the best. Just wanted to know if anyone here has any experience/advice with this type of thing since I know several of us are seniors or have parents who are. Thank you sincerely. Re: Not to be alarming, but my mom is having a health issue - JoeH - 09-22-2009 Sounds a lot like the results of a mini-stroke. Definitely get her in pronto. Could also be side effects of medication, depends a lot on what she is taking. Best wishes your direction. Re: Not to be alarming, but my mom is having a health issue - dmann - 09-22-2009 If you don't hear back from the Dr. within the next hour or so, I'd take her to an immediate care clinic if there is one nearby. They might escalate her to an ER, but at least she'll be seen right away. I agree with JoeH that it could be a mini stroke, but it could also be an anurysm or a mass pressing on a portion of her brain. Unfortunately, my experience is with the last option I mentioned. DM Re: Not to be alarming, but my mom is having a health issue - mrbigstuff - 09-22-2009 I would also consider this a warning sign that there could be something more serious down the road - that may be prevented if the correct measure are taken. My suggestion is to find the best neuro-care hospital in the area and then figure out how to get here in there for an evaluation. Re: Not to be alarming, but my mom is having a health issue - mstudio - 09-22-2009 I agree with the above, do it now. My 91 year old mom started showing the same symptoms. After a check up, they found liquid on her brain, after a fairly simple operation she is back to her wacky self. Re: Not to be alarming, but my mom is having a health issue - OWC Jamie - 09-22-2009 dehydration, aorta, stroke, alzheimer.s. went through those symptms with Dad, his mother and her sister and her father. 10 years further along, though. All tried to hide / denial the memory problem(s), too, unfortunately. Not something to put off . Re: Not to be alarming, but my mom is having a health issue - cbelt3 - 09-22-2009 Agreed, step #1 is to rush to the doctor. The ER may be a better choice, there's a lot that can be done rapidly in the case of stroke or chemical imbalance issue. Encourage dad to take mom NOW to see a medical pro. Don't call, just GO ! Re: Not to be alarming, but my mom is having a health issue - vision63 - 09-22-2009 I also agree with what everyone is saying. Do it now. I'll pray too. Re: Not to be alarming, but my mom is having a health issue - SteveO - 09-22-2009 Thanks, all. Much appreciated. Just got off phone with my dad. He's gonna try to get her into a doc today for testing, whether that is an ER or her family doc I'm not sure. I agree, something needs to be done right now. She is currently at bingo, but should be back soon. The challenge is that she is doc-averse and is already saying she's fine, etc. Thanks for the prayers and well wishes, we will need them! EDIT: Just talked to him again, we decided it's best that she go to an ER now; he's going to go pick her up and attempt to get her to the ER. Will report back when I have news. Thanks again, all. Re: Not to be alarming, but my mom is having a health issue - rgG - 09-22-2009 Good luck with your mom. I hope it is something that is easily treatable. |
