Have you flown on a private jet? - Mac1337 - 09-22-2009

There is a story in USA Today about this. Wondering if anyone has done it.

Yes. Very, very comfortable. Totally hassle-free.

Yeah, when I was 14 or so. My friend's father had a lot of $$$ and owned the plane himself. Pilot and copilot on 24 hour standby. Flew DC to Nantucket... now that was a great way to travel. The plane seated 12-14 people, and had a stewardess. Sweet way to travel!

But if the seating arrangement is the same , except fewer seats, what is the big deal? I like to think of a private jet arranged like a living room.

private like company owned? yes, small jet, seats 8 people.

what would be otherwise an overnight trip with hotel, rental car and long lines at the airport, became an usual day where I got a little earlier, drove to work, from there to the airport it's like 1/4 mile, walked right into the plane, no ID, no passport, 1 hour later landed 10 min driving from supplier, did business all day, in the evening they took us back at the airport and 1 hour later I was back home.

The only inconvenience is that there is no flight attendand on the plane, but there is cold beer (on the way back, of course)

Funny story about private jets - I was riding shotgun on a prop job and we were sitting in the pilots room at some airport in PA waiting for them to load the plane. It was late at night and we were BS-ing with a couple other pilots, all of us in shirt sleeves and tie - no jackets, about things we'd done or seen, gear up landings and the like. Off to one side, conspicuously not taking part in the story telling was a very neatly uniformed pilot acting a bit snobbishly. Time passes and a line boy wearing coveralls with headphones hung around his neck comes into the lounge, looks around and says "who's flying the Lear?"

Mr Cool just nods in his direction as if it should have been clear. The line boy says "well, your boss asked me to tell you, and these are his words, 'if you don't get your ass back to the plane, they'll leave without you.'"

He suddenly became so small that I believe he could have slipped out under the door if it had been closed. We were kind enough not to laugh until he was out on the runway hightailing it to he plane.

Yes...a Gulfstream II and a Hawker 800XP (also a T-37, but that was with the Air Force).

I was thinking it would be a blast to hire a private jet for a family vacation. If you could gather 10 to 12 people the per person cost may not be much more than flying commercial. I don't know.

Yes, friend had a jet share (multiple businesspeople owned the jet).

Then just a couple of years ago on the way to pick up my friend, the pilot took off by himself...and came right back down again.

I now stick to commercial jets (and avoid the regional puddle jumpers)
