Anyone here shop at Aldi? - rgG - 10-08-2009
A new Aldi store opened across from our SuperTarget and, since I have a Grand Opening coupon, I was going to check them out. I know you need to bring your own shopping bag, or buy one of theirs, and that you have to pay 25¢ to get a cart and then that is returned when you return the cart, but other than that, what should I know before I go?
The main thing that is putting me off about the store is that they apparently don't take credit cards. I pay for everything with a CC and don't really carry much cash, ever. They take debit cards, which I don't use, and they don't take checks, so if I want to shop there I will have to make a special effort to have cash, I guess.

We have them over here in the UK and they are known for very cheap prices but a more limited range than other supermarkets. They are about 75% food, drink, cleaning stuff etc. but with a varying selection of "one offs" ranging from clothes to electrical and computer items. I don't shop there regularly as there isn't one local but if I'm passing I drop in to see what they have. A few years ago I picked up a USB Graphics tablet, A4 size for £14.99 including wireless mouse. It didn't say it worked on a Mac but at that price it was worth a shot and it does. Several years later and it's still working well.
They are similar to Lidl, do you have them? Both are German based.

Just Aldi.
It's a no nonsense, low frills, mostly grocery, but some other stuff store.
Who can complain about that?
And sometimes they sell Medion computers and electronics, which is interesting.

I noticed in the sale paper that they had some non food stuff, like sheets and blankets, but I didn't know they sold electronics, too. That is interesting.

I didn't think there were any in Ma, but it appears one opened up right down the street from my sister's employ.
I'll have to check it out some day. Must be in the old K-mart building.

My family shops at Aldi for 90% of our food. We save lots o' $$$ Before they took debit cards, when they required cash, we brought cash. It was worth the hassle. Just keep a quarter handy in your car.

Dakota, the "hoops" keep their prices low. No need to pay anybody to retrieve carts. No need to pay 3% on every credit card transaction to Big Plastic. Plenty of low-cost, quality alternatives to inflated name brands with massive advertising budgets. Trust me, Aldi is not a eurosocialist plot. It's capitalism all the way.

Go check 'em out. One opened in my former city just as I was moving. The closest one to me now is about 15 minutes too far out of my way to make a detour. One of their big loss-leaders is milk...they're probably $0.75/gallon cheaper than the CVS/Walgreens around here, which are typically cheaper than the supermarkets.
If you're used to shopping at SuperTarget, an entire Aldi store is probably half of the square footage of a SuperTarget's grocery department.
If their store is close to you, and you like their house brands or occasional specials, nothing wrong with them.
