bathroom talk - help with my commode - mrbigstuff - 10-09-2009 So, I installed a new float and valve (Korky brand) and now it makes this sucking sound (insert jokes here). I can't seem to adjust the water level well enough to get it to stop. It may be a faulty valve, but I have installed these before without this happening. Any ideas? I also need to get a new gasket for the flapper valve (it seems to be leaking and with H2O charges around here, this is costing me $$$) but I don't believe that to be related to the above question. Re: bathroom talk - help with my commode - lafinfil - 10-09-2009 I would still suspect the flap is leaking Try adding some food coloring to the tank and see if it is leaking (would produce color in the bowl) If sucking sound is actually siphoning, then the valve itself is suspect (possibly adjustment) Re: bathroom talk - help with my commode - NewtonMP2100 - 10-09-2009 ....this post would make a sailor blush..... Re: bathroom talk - help with my commode - M>B> - 10-09-2009 Look at adjusting the "chain" to the float to be sure the flapper properly resets itself and makes a good seal. Also, make sure the "chain" is not hung up on something and will allow the flapper to seal. Every time I do one of these I use a kitchen scrubber and clean the flapper and seat, Re: bathroom talk - help with my commode - Psurfer - 10-09-2009 I get the same symptom occasionally w/a similar set-up, installed ~18mo ago. When it happens here, it's also the case that the flapper has not sealed all the way, and then the valve makes that loud jetting suck sound. It seems as if it goes into that crisis mode if it takes too long to refill the tank. When it happens, I push down on the flapper rod to seal it, then help out by adding water to the tank to bring it up to the proper level. -When the water level gets close to the full line, the Corky stops sucking. (insert joke here). Note my set has the wire rod going down to the flapper instead of a chain, and that's really the culprit in this case; the metal guide for that rod (like an eye of a hook & eye) does not always stay securely fastened in place, disallowing the rod to fall through it completely straight, so about 20% of the time, I have to get in there and help it the rest of the way... it Sucks. Re: bathroom talk - help with my commode - Racer X - 10-09-2009 FWIW, you can get flappers that are made from a different material that is far more chlorine resistant than the old school rubber. Just an extra few bucks. Should last a lot longer. Re: bathroom talk - help with my commode - mrbigstuff - 10-09-2009 thanks, folks. I believe MB and Psurfer have hit it right on. In fact, Psurfer, it sounds like we have the same problem but I have a chain on my valve vs. the rod (again, insert joke here). 'fil, I did try the food coloring trick and noticed the faulty valve that way. does an improvement exist for this? it's pretty Neanderthal stuff, this toilet tech. Re: bathroom talk - help with my commode - mrbigstuff - 10-09-2009 thanks, RX, i will look for that at my local hardware store (we still have a few!) Re: bathroom talk - help with my commode - Racer X - 10-09-2009 I think they are reddish-orange. Might be silicone. They have that sort of slippery feel to them. The cheap ones are black rubber. |
