How should I wipe MacBook clean and migrate items back from an external drive? - Grateful11 - 10-09-2009

Now I know this has been brought up a bunch of times but I'm not the
greatest state of mind right now so if y'all will bare with me. My wife had a $75
Staples Award so she bought me a USB WD 320g ext. and my son a 16g
flashdrive and didn't have but $35 in both of them with the rewards
card. Anyway what I want is to clone the current MacBook drive onto the
ext. then wipe the int. drive clean reinstall the Leopard OS it came
with. My main objective is migrate my Bookmarks, Address Book
and all my old Mail Messages and Accounts back into the new installed OS. If
this is possible. I've done something similar in the past but it's been
a while. If there's a site that tells how to do this I'd be glad to take a
look. I thought Super Duper used to be free? Should use it or Time
Machine or something else as my first step backup?

use super duper (yes, its free) to clone to the external drive. then after you've wiped and reinstalled leopard, use migration assistant.

Oh, and if you're going through the trouble, install snow leopard!

I looked up Super Duper and it said $27.95 @ Versiontracker. I thought
I had always used it free.

Should I format it regular Mac OS Extended or Case Sensitive?

I would do Snow Leopard but I can't drive until mid-Nov. or even ride in
car for 1-2 weeks.

Thanks

Migrating the data you mention back manually isn't hard. Just copy the files

for Mail: User>Library>Mail
for Address book: User>Library>Application Suppport>Address Book
for Safari: User>Library>Safari (this will copy all your bookmarks & session history, etc) o

alternatively, in either Safari Firefox, export bookmarks as html, copy the html file to new computer, then import
