SALT LAKE CITY -- Hold on to your cameras! A professional photographer in the Salt Lake Valley called KSL News to warn other professionals and amateurs about camera robberies that are costing thousands of dollars.
Skip Huntress uses Temple Square as the backdrop to many of his shoots with clients. Recently, he had just wrapped up a shoot there when he was robbed of $6,000 worth of gear.

ESPECIALLY a Utah CCW...
Utah has reciprocity agreements with 18 western states. Take the classes, and do the qualification shoot, and you're legal in every western state except California.
Oh, and get theft insurance on your camera gear...

First of all, the gear was used, the guy used it in a photo shoot.
Secondly, he should have had a guard dog in his trunk.
Thirdly, the guy has glasses, he was just crying out to be robbed.
All kidding aside, I have recently shot down there and it is a relatively safe area. That being said, the LDS Church's Temple is there and it can make you forget to keep your eyes open. I would never leave cameras in my car when it can be viewed in plain sight being loaded. Best of luck to those affected though and for crying out loud, get some insurance.

Get a cheap camera body and put a little C-4 with a proximity sensor like the type used to tell you when your kid wanders off.

Pictureline tips to avoid camera theft
1. Be aware. Shoot with both eyes open, and have an assistant if you can.
2. Do not leave your gear in the car, even for a short stop.
3. Once you are done shooting, take out the flashcard and put it in a safe place so you don't loose the photos.
4. Carry a backpack on your back with your gear in it.
Some of my own tips to help the TV journalists.
5. Gouge and scrape the gear so it look shabby
6. As the thief is running away, shout out, "jokes is on you, I went to the bathroom and didn't wash my hands".
7. Eat plenty of beans before the shoot
8. Constantly appear to be wiping you nose on your hand then touch your gear.
9. Put a mullet on your gear
10. Put bullet stickers on cameras and lenses with bullet hole stickers

I recall a story from many years ago (20+) where a photographer beat an attempted mugger
senseless with a Nikon F swung from the end of a camera strap. Take a couple pounds of brass
with angular corners and put it on the end of a leather strap and see who wants to play.
