Big Lots: Refurb DVD Player/Recorder $29 ! - Grateful11 - 11-02-2009

If you subscribe to Big Lots email weekly ad previews you can get their ad
a few days early. I don't know what brand it is but they're going to have a
DVD Player/Recorder for $29. Have no earthly idea what kind of
quality we're talking about here but it does DVD+R/RW's

probably a Funai {Magnavox/Sylvania} like this "tunerless" Magnavox MWR10D6 for $50 @ Overstock.

Note, DVD+R/RW discs only and Brands and styles vary by store.

Still, it's only $29 and it plays DVDs...

I bought one this weekend.

It is indeed a Magnavox.

Even better, it uses both +R/RW and -R/RW, AND has a TUNER.

Component outputs, coax output, etc.

Tested with a few VHS tapes, looks pretty darn good so far.

For $29, hard to beat. Might buy a 2nd as backup just in case.

ATSC tuner?

didn't dig that deep yet - didn't hook up to coax cable, just as a player/recorder (for now).

will report back...

Please do. That would make it a huge bargain if it could do ATSC and QAM, cheaper than a converter box. I would buy 4 or 5 for gifts.

I've not paid enough attention to this subject in the past. How would you use such a device? If you are paying for cable of satellite, wouldn't that service provide the box?

Re: Big Lots: Refurb DVD Player/Recorder $29 ! - silvarios - 11-03-2009

In order to get QAM, well clear QAM, you need a QAM tuner. A regular NTSC tuner will not work. QAM gives you whatever digital channels that you cable provider broadcasts unencrypted.

As far as ATSC, it is a cheap way to bring in digital channels on an older NTSC only set.

What silvarios said.

My Mom has four older TVs in her house but she does not want to pay for digital cable boxes for all of them. HD cable tuner compatibility (usually QAM) would allow all the sets to get the free digital channels along with the DVR. I think my brother's GF has at least one set without a converter box.
