So how long until an i5/i7 MacMini? - mikebw - 11-03-2009

As good as the current product lineup is, the elimination of the 24" iMac has left something of a hole for me. The 27" screen is great, but perhaps too great... sure, just get a 24" refurb you might say, but what of the people who would elect for the modern performance of a quad-core i5 or i7 in a slightly smaller package? There is no such beast.

I don't see Apple re-releasing a 24" iMac anytime soon, but perhaps that is more likely than a quad-core mac mini would ever be. Woe. Woe.

3 weeks after you give in and buy an iMac.

Not until the iMacs get significantly faster. The minis are meant to be the runts of the Apple lineup and putting an i5/i7 would go counter to that.

buy the new 27", and Frankenimac it into the appropriate size for your liking, then repurpose the 27" panel for something you consider satisfactory its greatness. or hire someone to do it for you... heck, if they a do a good job, it may lead to a new business opportunity; you're not the only person desirous of those characteristics... but be the first to market w/ a compelling product, and you'll do well.

An i5 or i7 mini wont happen for a very long time, if ever. Benchmarks have the i7 out performing a MacPro in Photoshop. There's no way Apple is going to release a $600 machine that bests their $2600 machines.

Maybe in a year I will be able to find a broken i5mac and hack it up.
