Just Curious: Why Can't They Fix iBook Logic Boards Right? - SteveO - 04-05-2006

I'm not bitching, but my iB 900 logic board has failed again. First failure was two years into ownership. Replaced LB a month ago. Second LB is now failing. I'm hoping to get a new machine out of it, we'll see what they say when I call them later today. Just wondering why Apple cannot get this repair right as there are minions of folk with the same experience as me.

If it's just a part, you'd think they'd re-engineer it to work so they wouldn't have to keep replacing, etc. It's got to be costing them a lot of money to keep taking repeat failures.

You know...it's funny that you posted this message.

I have a 2001 iBook G3 700 (it was the higher end of the two models being offered at the time, the other model being a 600MHz machine, with a CD-ROM, as opposed to mine with a burner).

After many years of faithful service, I think it has succumbed to the notorious 'logic board' problem.

Day before yesterday, as I attempted to wake it from sleep, there seemed to be no response (the screen was dark, but I could sense the HD was spinning). After restarting a couple of times (by removing power), and getting no where, on a whim I decided to press down on that area to the left of the track pad. Sure enough, the screen would flicker with strange patterns, then go off again as soon as I let up on the pressure.

Don't know if Apple has an extended repair program still going for this issue. I'm gonna take it by a local Apple authorized service center. We'll see where this goes...any suggestions?

Carnos, sorry to hear of your issue. I'd approach it by telling them it is a KNOWN issue with these iBooks, even though yours is obviously out of warranty...this should not matter. Though I don't know if this will help any. Good luck!

To SteveO,

If possible, wait until the new Intel iBooks are released...you may be able to cajole a new one of those out of Apple instead of possibly getting a new (but dead-end) G4 right now.

Good thought, pinkoos! I have the old Pismo to use in the meantime (my gf is actually the one who uses this errant iBook), so this is an intriguing thought.

Though I'm not certain Apple would spring for a replacement yet. From what I've read online over the months, I get the general impression that Apple may consider replacing a Mac after the 3rd or so failure. Not sure though.

I wondered the same thing Steve O, but then I gave up trying after my second logic board, within the span of a year, and just got a Powerbook instead.
Why couldn't they just fix them *right*, instead of installing the same bad crap over and over again?

This will actually be my third problem with the iBook...2 logic boards, and one AirPort problem. The AP wasn't as big a deal, but I'm hoping I'll squeak by with the fact that it's magic number 3.

Does anyone know if the G4 iBooks have the same problem?

Greg recently had to pay to replace the logic board in his G4 iBook - had the exact same symptoms as when they go out on the G3's. Hence, *his* brand new PB.

Crap, same problem in G4? WTF?!

Thanks, though.
