McCann Erickson welcomes Sterling Cooper - Blankity Blank - 11-18-2009

Nothing splashy. Simple and elegant.

They* bought ads in trade pubs like Adweek and Brandweek too.

I'm a sucker for this stuff.

(Of course wait till McCann learns they bought the steak but are barely getting the sizzle.)

*McCann Erickson is a very real, very large real world ad agency for those that may not know.

Ack. I should have known better than to check this out. We watch them on DVD and season three is still in our future. Geez, I'm stupid.

Re: McCann Erickson welcomes Sterling Cooper - Mr Downtown - 11-18-2009

I figured most of the still-extant companies must have given their consent to have their trademarks used. But McCann-Erickson has sort of played the heavy for several seasons. Do they figure any exposure is good exposure, or just have a sense of humor about themselves?

They're the world's largest advertising agency. I don't think they have to worry about what they pretend-did 40 years ago. They seem to think it's a hoot, since they are making a point of flaunting the connection.

At least 40 years ago you didn't have to wait for a Flash intro to load before you could see an ad!

Re: McCann Erickson welcomes Sterling Cooper - Grateful11 - 11-19-2009

I have to admit "Mad Men" is very good and very well done.

Re: McCann Erickson welcomes Sterling Cooper - guitarist - 11-19-2009

Twisted PR wishful thinking, in an effort to whitewash the content of the show, which clearly depicted McCann Erickson as undesirable. The thought of working for McCann was so distasteful to Sterling Cooper that their top talent performed a high-risk last-minute mutiny in order to avoid the disaster of having to work under that brand.

What exactly is McCann Erickson welcoming?

By the time they get their hands on Sterling Cooper, both Sterling and Cooper (and Draper and Pryce and Peggy and Pete and Joan...) have flown the coop, leaving only a diminished shell of a company. A company that doesn't have Sterling, or Cooper. Oops!

Bravo McCann Erickson! On a boneheaded scoop, advertising a failed merger!

Re: McCann Erickson welcomes Sterling Cooper - Silencio - 11-20-2009

About ten years ago, I worked for a well-run, profitable, creative-driven ad agency that was absorbed into the local McCann-Erickson office and effectively ruined.

So I'd say the Sterling Cooper/McCann storyline is firmly grounded in reality.

This is for you, McCan't! >Big Grin<
