G5 Dual 1.8 RAM. Going Big. I ... Think. - chopper - 11-18-2009

I realized today that I still have two 128 RAM chips in my G5 (along with two 1 gig chips). Is the G5 limited to a max of 1 gig in each slot? I was hoping to increase the RAM in those currently 128 slots to two gig each.

If it were 2004 instead of 2009 I'd agree.

umm, not the best time to buy RAM.
$180 now gets you the 8GB {4x2GB} PC2-6400 I paid $75 for back in April!

DDR3 for the i5/i7 is even more ridiculous.
Yes, the current RAM market sucks all the fun out of going faster.

90% sure 4 gigs is the max -- depends on which Dual 1.8 it is

Our forum sponsor's Web site has an excellent ram finding guide, I would suggest you start there...

Thanks for that very helpful answer.

It's hard for me to justify a new Intel tower for $$$$$ and what with the current state of the economy. This G5 has been running 24/7 since March of 2005 with a minimum amount of problems. It cranks on Photoshop files most days without complaint. I've been doing some slide scanning of late and with 100 large PS files open it starts to slow a bit. A few dollars for RAM is much easier to justify than thousands for a Intel Mac.

well, you probably dont need a MP =)

even a new 21" (or refurb 24") iMac will make that G5 look like its standing still.

I made the jump 2+ years ago from dual 2.0 G5 towers (with 4 gigs ram, upgraded video and fast drives) to 2.4 gig iMacs and the difference was amazing

i didnt have the $$$ for MP towers either, but it didnt matter.

I concur with jdc. You may have purchased the G5 Tower in 2005, but it's still slower than a 3-year old ordinary iMac.

Intel Macs aren't new anymore. An affordable student budget low-end MacBook can outperform a five-year-old PowerPc system. Heck man, a $300 PC can outperform it.

I've put RAM and other upgrades into older systems than that, G4 towers, for example. But they were hobby systems, not my primary workhorse. A pony is due for retirement, or maybe extended service as a secondary player after 3-5 years.

Sorry to hear you've not had an opportunity to upgrade from your five-year-old tower, hope you can afford a more current Mac soon!

I would agree that any recent iMac would kick the G5's butt, however I'm with chopper on this one. My Dual 2.0 G5 still gets the job done for me, and these days that job is increasingly just checking email, mixing audio and some video digitizing. Of course there are 8 slots for RAM in this model and I have managed to fill them up over the years fairly cheaply, topping out at 4.5GB right now. Any serious rendering needs I have can be done at work on the MacPro so it's hard to justify buying a new computer that I don't really need. Soon though... since I can't run the latest OS on it I imagine there will be some more serious roadblocks in the future with it.
