... for the Darkside, unfortunately, but only way to transfer maps. In store only. If you have a Magellan Meridian or SportTrak model, RS is clearancing the older Magellan Mapsend Topo USA software for $ 30 ( usually $99 ). This will not work with newer Explorist models. Fast install of maps on GPS receiver using SD card and reader instead of serial connection.

What is the catch with this? It works from the handheld unit? Or provides cartoon maps to locations?
I'm a definite novice to this stuff. I know a great deal more about the TDRS system than I do about the devices that use them.

I like a nicely folded printed paper map. I know I'm living in the past, but I really do like paper maps.

Jimmypoo, this software loads street level maps onto an SD card that can be read by Meridian gps receivers.
Instead of the major highway only maps built into the gps, this adds local details, campgrounds, etc.
You define the area that you would like to keep in memory, and a pc SLOWLY makes a map, and sends it to the SD card, or painfully slowly over a serial connection to the gps.
We are talking hours of time.

I loaded a 16 MB region ( as Magellan calls them ) of nearly all of WA state using a USB 1.1 connection to a USB cardreader and it took about a minute. I just got a USB 2.0 card for the PC and will be loading larger regions to a 256 MB SD card and timing the transfer. Stay tuned ...
