There's an old proverb in the video encoding world: "Speed, size, quality: pick two." It means that you always have to make a trade-off between the time it takes to encode a video, the amount of compression used, and the picture quality. Well, this release of HandBrake refuses to compromise. It picks all three.

Since I have Core Duo machines, I need the 32 bit version, correct? The 64 bit version is for Core 2 Duos?

don't you also need a 64 bit version of VLC to be able to use the 64 bit version of Handbreak?

Thanks much for the notification. This was an unexpected surprise, and it looks like a crazy-cool update. Greatly admire their drive to minimize and focus. Had my doubts after all the add-ons from .93

As I understand it, VLC is required if you want to rip your DVDs using Handbrake. So if you want to rip your DVDs using 64-bit Handbrake, you'll need 64-bit VLC. If you rip your DVDs with another tool (e.g., Mac The Ripper), you can run 64-bit without VLC.

VLC 1.0.3 is out today as well but I cannot find the 64 bit version of it. I don't think they have posted it yet. Had to stay with the 32-bit version of Handbrake for now.
Does anyone know how to get a 64-bit version of VLC V1.0.3?

VLC 1.0.2 was released as 64-bit but then pulled due to having some nasty bugs. The following note is on videolan's download page:
Note: VLC will not be available for 64-bits Intel-based Macs until further notice. You can safely use the 32-bits package instead.
my guess is there will be a 1.0.4 soon that brings back 64-bit.
