DarwinPorts and my rear end - Greg the dogsitter - 04-07-2006 Anyone have opinions on the best way to install unix-y stuff? I've grown to like DarwinPorts over the past week, but also understand that it puts stuff in the /opt/ directory. Does that cause problems for other software? For instance, what if PHP is maybe expecting a database to be in /usr, but DarwinPorts has put everything in /opt/? And what if PHP5 is already installed, but DarwinPorts installs PHP4 as a necessary component of some other program? Whatcha think? GtDS Edit: That should get more views. ![]() Re: DarwinPorts and my rear end - NewtonMP2100 - 04-07-2006 is this related to the Uranus thread? ![]() Re: DarwinPorts and my rear end - Refurbvirgin - 04-07-2006 So now how will you know how many thread views are by Unix fans and how many by pedophiles? Just for the record I only opened this thread because I've found Greg's words entertaining in the past, should any FBI child-porn investigators be monitoring this forum. Nor do I have any intent of posting nude pics of myself. Please don't kick down my door at three a.m. Re: DarwinPorts and my rear end - cbelt3 - 04-07-2006 Your baby ? If so, congrats. Read the subject line. :-) Re: DarwinPorts and my rear end - Seacrest - 04-07-2006 Just add /opt/whatever to your path? I think you would have to recompile something like PHP4 in order to point it to /opt/blah/blah for certain binaries or maybe the Darwinports team has thought of that and created the proper symlinks for itself. I have never used dp. I did use fink once back on 10.1, but never liked the fact that it created that non-standard path. Most *nix software I need compiles fine under 10.3, and goes where it's expected to, usually /usr/local. Re: DarwinPorts and my rear end - Gutenberg - 04-07-2006 I'm thinking I really don't want to know about your rear end. Thank you. Re: DarwinPorts and my rear end - rgG - 04-08-2006 Is that really your rear end or just a generic rear end that you are trying to pass off as your rear end? Seacrest: I owe you some real responses, here and elsewhere; will get to them ASAP. No, don't answer that. See my next paragraph. > I think you would have to recompile something like > PHP4 in order to point it to /opt/blah/blah for > certain binaries or maybe the Darwinports team has > thought of that and created the proper symlinks > for itself. Thus far, I'm a GUI (Excel, Access, FileMaker, etc.) sort of guy. While I have the developer tools installed, and have opened Xcode and thought "Hey, some menus!", that's about as far as I got. So I fully understand the idea of compiling with different different options for different targets, I haven't a clue as how to pull that off. Not that I'm asking for a walkthrough! But that is why I'm going to stick with DarwinPorts for now; I need the handholding. |
