McDonald's to lift fee for Internet access

McDonald's Corp. said Monday that it will soon offer free wireless Internet access at most of its U.S. fast-food restaurants as it tries to broaden its appeal still further.

"We're not just about hamburgers," said Dave Grooms, chief information officer for McDonald's USA. "We are about convenience and all kinds of value."

The company, the world's largest fast-food chain, has offered Internet access for about five years.

In mid-January, it will lift the $2.95 fee it has charged for two hours of Internet access at 11,000 of its 14,000 U.S. locations. There will be no time limit after the fee is lifted.

"McDonald's is about value - value in our food, value in our services," Grooms said. "It's a natural fit."

I used McD's wifi connection soon after it was announced publically. I can't recall when it started charging a fee.

We pulled into McD's to pick up a couple Egg McMuffin's a few years ago and I thought
access was free too but there was a log in page with a way to pay so I said forget it.
Yes Virginia there is a charge.

I've been using it for about a year I think. Ever since AT&T allowed DSL customers to login for free. (not truly free since you're still paying for the DSL service).

Here in Florida they give you an access code on your receipt for free access good for 45 minutes.

McDonald's has had free wifi at locations in England for a while now. The problem is...you wouldn't catch me dead eating any of their "food", either here or there.

Come on Dave if you were dead you wouldn't be eating anywhere. ;-)

Wednesday last, I was in Aix-en-Provence needing a large block of Internet time. "McDo's" was the one place I discovered that offered free Internet. I purchased un café (expresso), une tranche d'ananas (a slice of pineapple) and un muffin chocolat.

Three hours later, it became very clear that screaming kids were equally irritating in English and French. And, no, I didn't order a "Royale with cheese."

WooHoo, good to know. I am not much for Micky D's food, but I do like their new McCafe coffees.
