2009 Almost Gone - What Home/Property Improvements, Repairs Have You Made This Year? - Rick-o - 12-16-2009 2009 was a scary year as far as household spending goes, but sometimes, spend we must. How about a little show and tell about your 2009 project(s)? I had a chimney almost collapse on my old stone building (an old two room schoolhouse) at the end of last winter due to a freakish thaw/freeze cycle. Luckily, I found a good stone mason locally who did a great job of re-grouting a really difficult chimney. I was impressed, and scrounged up some more cash and had him do the gables. I have some more stone work for him, but I had to put it off until 2010. I call this building my own personal Money Pit. Some day, I'll have it finished. *WARNING* Amateur photographer behind camera! Picked the wettest week this Fall, so there are huge heavy equipment ruts. So far, a hole, a foundation and as of today there should be a frame. The roof trusses showed up yesterday. If I could sell rocks at a penny a piece I'd be rich. Not too many pics. I wanted to do a shot a day progression, but I missed this morning and being there in daylight is tough right now. I do have a shot of a rock my tractor couldn't pick up so I rolled it. (I have a rock dump)It was round or that would not have happened. Your Rock chimneys are nice. I have some metal fireplace parts from one torn down here. damper and supports Desert southwest or eastern Oregon / Wa. ? Re: 2009 Almost Gone - What Home/Property Improvements, Repairs Have You Made This Year? - LyleH - 12-16-2009 Had my 275 foot driveway overlayed with 2+ inches of asphalt. Had our shakes replaced with CertainTeed Presidential FRS shingles. Had the carport roof tarpaper torn off down to the wood (3 layers) and had Olefin TPO ThermoPlastic laid down. These 3 items were big bucks. Finished painting the house, both the siding and the trim. Took about a year to complete it. I did all of the painting myself except for one high-up place on the second story I didn't want to tackle. LyleH Re: 2009 Almost Gone - What Home/Property Improvements, Repairs Have You Made This Year? - Don Kiyoti - 12-16-2009 Had to replace my natural gas line & plumbing (which I posted about here). Put off: partial re-roofing, interior painting, bathroom rehab, reupholster sofa and chair. Re: 2009 Almost Gone - What Home/Property Improvements, Repairs Have You Made This Year? - davester - 12-16-2009 I really like that chimney, and hope that you live in the north-central or north-east US (i.e. far from any potential seismic activity). My big project this year was rebuilding the french doors, which I discussed in an earlier thread. Here are some repeat photos: ![]() ![]() ![]() I've got some big projects planned for the coming months so I should have more to post in next year's thread. Re: 2009 Almost Gone - What Home/Property Improvements, Repairs Have You Made This Year? - Numo - 12-16-2009 Replaced a half dozen light bulbs that burned out. Re: 2009 Almost Gone - What Home/Property Improvements, Repairs Have You Made This Year? - lost in space - 12-16-2009 davester, Missed that block plane in your original post. good on you! What persuasion is it? Mentioned previously, we're getting all new windows and exterior doors. Going from leaky, wood-frame windows with removable storm windows, poor-fitting exterior doors to the latest energy-conserving vinyl and low-e glass. There's a huge difference in heat retention. We have a good contractor with excellent installers, very conscientious, meticulous detail guys. They cut in egress windows in the basement for us about 10 years ago, so I had them do this work. Very pleased. It's much more involved than I thought. Can't believe I ever thought I might do it myself. Re: 2009 Almost Gone - What Home/Property Improvements, Repairs Have You Made This Year? - dk62 - 12-16-2009 Bathroom remodel New roof New heat pump/furnace Started (yeah, you saw correctly - started) saving for kid's college (entering in the fall) - so nothing envisioned for the next 8 years (2 kids). Re: 2009 Almost Gone - What Home/Property Improvements, Repairs Have You Made This Year? - Michael - 12-16-2009 I don't think we did anything. Of course, that means that there is more on the "must do" list. I wonder if I can avoid it for another year? |
