Hey Guys, we made it through the storm but have no power. - rgG - 04-08-2006

I am posting this from the iBook and dial-up. The storm hit us at 4:15 am and I ran around unplugging the iBook and shutting down the inteliMac just before all hell broke loose. I didn't get to the eMac and airport upstairs so they went through a hard shut-down when the power crashed and went out.

We had about 15 minutes of hail, wind, more lightening than I think I have seen in quite a while, it looked like a strobe. I had gotten the husband, daughter and both cats and we were deciding when to go to the basement and it was all over, just that quick.

I had gotten the TV on for just long enough to see the dark red cell over us and hear them say that there may be rotation in the cell and then the power went off.

I haven't been out to see if we had any damage, but just looking out the windows and doors it looks like things are pretty much OK. We will have to see if there is any damage further up the road. I called the power company again a few minutes ago and they said they were working on it, but they didn't know when they would have us restored. At least it is light now and we can see. Last night it was even more frightening with just a couple of flash lights.

So here in Alpharettta, GA we are OK. Let's hope neighbor Mike Sellers and Jimmypoo and Decocritter who is more in town Atlanta, weathered it OK, too.

BunBun wanted me to post that she is not happy because I won't open the fridge to get at her canned food. I hope she can have it for lunch instead of breakfast. Big Grin

Sounds like quite a storm. I'm glad nothing happened like trees landing on your house and you're all safe. Malibu sends his sympathies to BunBun. He knows what it is like to face nothing but a dish full of dry food.

I hate those "pocket storms." They are on you without warning, they are really violent and they often have a tornado hiding in them. I am very glad you came out all right.

Thanks guys. My husband heard on the radio that they think there may have been a tornado not far from us and that one building in a nearby community was destroyed, but we still don't have TV, so we haven't seen much. I just called the Chick-fil-A in town and they have power, so there might be a breakfast trip in the very near future. I might even snag a cup of coffee somewhere, I could use the caffeine right about now. Now's when I could use one of those cans of coffee that heats itself up. Smile

I won't be on much till we get power back, but I at least I have about 3 hours of battery in the iBook and dial-up is working. Let's cross our fingers for power to be back soon.

Wow, that was fast. I lose power all the time--there's a transformer on a pole a couple of blocks away that seems to give up the ghost on whim. It's only a few hours when that happens, but after a bad storm it's a day or so. It's frustrating, because only the few blocks around me lose power, while all around us people have lights. After TS Isabel we were out for two days while no one around us lost power at all.

Well we have a few mountains between us and tornado alley. We did get nailed Monday night by some lightning the set a mountain on fire but last night's storm was just that, a storm.
I was stationed in Memphis and saw a funnel. I missed the big one that had hit the base in Huntsville where I went to missile school for a year.
No, up here in the Valley we just worry about hurricanes that get in and can't get out and blow through like a gutter ball.

Glad to hear everyone checking in and doing well.

That storm blew through Birmingham at about 1:30AM. I'd fallen asleep in my chair in front of the TV after watching the movie Bad Education. The back door was open & it was a blast of wind that woke me up. I turned things off & went to bed & listened as the wind shook the house. This morning I surveyed the damage & was surprised that the power never went off. My back yard is trashed with houseplants & tree limbs scattered all over the place. A huge limb broke off of the oak tree next door & is hanging over my house suspended by virginia creeper vines. I feel like the sword of Damocles is hanging over my head.

Sorry to hear that DavidC. I hope you get that thing down with no damage. Those creepers are really strong, so they will probably hold it in place till you can get someone out there. Thank goodness it didn't hit your house last night.

Hey Rhonda,

Thanks for thinking of me, just down the road in Roswell. *sarcastic smile*

We actually did fine and slept through most of it. The lightening woke me up around 6ish. My daughter was awake when I went in to check on her at 7, but I'm not sure how long she had been awake. Wife and son are in Ohio for the weekend.

We didn't lose power (the 5 UPS's in the house would have woken me up, I'm sure) and the yard needs a bit of cleaning, but not too bad. My friend in East Cobb said they were watching the news during the storm and Alpharetta was shaded purple, meaning very severe storms.
