Saturday Nights Dinner: Grey Peas and Bacon - Paul F. - 12-19-2009

Finally tried a recipe that I bought a book to get.
The book; "A Feast of Memories. Black Country Food and Life at the Turn of the Century", by Marjorie Cashmore.

The Original Recipe;
"Grey Peas and Bacon"
1lb Dried Grey Peas
3oz Pearl Barley
1lb Bacon
A large sliced onion
salt and pepper

Soak the peas and barley overnight and then place them in a saucepan together with the onion, previously browned bacon and salt and pepper. Cook slowly for several hours.

My Modifications;
By the by, I could find no difference between "grey peas" and plain old grocery store dried split peas... so that's what I used.
I'm too impatient to soak things overnight for the next nights dinner..
So I soaked 'em for about 3 hours this morning.
Sauteed the large onion, and browned the bacon (leaving the bacon "under-done", not crunchy). Bacon was cut in about 2" long pieces. In retrospect, some smoked pork shanks would be GREAT in this!
I used some regular salt, some regular pepper, and a little crushed red pepper.

It's been in the crock pot (on low) for just about 5 hours, and it's coming along very nicely...
The peas are still a bit under-done, but I've got another three hours before dinner time! The taste-test so far shows great promise! :-)

Plan on serving it with some nice crusty sourdough bread..

Of course, if you hate peas, then you'll probably want to skip this one.

Oh, and I used about 4 cups of water...

I've never heard of "Grey" peas. They look green in your picture.

Paul, has your gym membership lapsed?

Re: Saturday Nights Dinner: Grey Peas and Bacon - Paul F. - 12-19-2009

Ahem.. that's because I used plain old grocery store dried split peas... green.
I don't know what a "grey pea" is either.

Guess you have to be from England to be privvy to that.

Close to what we are having - homemade split pea soup - couple of smoked ham hocks in it for flavor. Trying to eat a bit light in preparation for the festivities over the next week.

I'd eat that in a heartbeat. Yeah, do ham hocks next time!
