Why does my kids' Sawtooth boot into open firmware? - David S - 04-08-2006
Sawtooth G4 450 MHz; 1GB RAM; OSX 10.3.9.
Every time the computer powers up, it presents a grey screen welcoming me to open firmware. Says to enter "mac_boot" to go to Mac OS. When I do this, the machine boots again and everything works nicely.
Why is this happening?

OK, I've been meaning to ask this for a long time, but where do the nicknames for various Macs come from?
Sawtooth? Pismo? Wallstreet?
I understand Lamp Post/Sun Flower/Flowerpot for the G4 iMacs.
I understand Bondi for the early iMacs (Bondi Blue)
But these others I just don't get. What gives?

Then Apple doesn't provide meaningful names in the real world--how many PowerMacintosh G4 models are there?--plus places like this are filled with people who like to think they're "cool" by using "super secret Apple inside code names," so the code names become used as identifiers.
The code names are meaningless--but if you want to know which of the many, many PowerMacintosh G4 computers someone has, it may be the only way to have a meaningful discussion.

Back to the o/f question (remember that)--
dunno, could be something in pram telling it to do so.
Have you reset PRAM?
Replaced battery recently? A Sawtooth would be approaching its third battery about now.
Is there something funky about your mouse or keyboard or what's in an optical drive that could be triggering this?
Is the system completely stock?

Your boot device is probably set incorrectly in the nvram. You can reset everything to the defaults as follows:
after a restart and once in open firmware type: reset-nvram
then type: set-defaults
to restart type: reset-all
(only type what is in italics)
Zapping the pram might fix it as well, but I don't think so. Changing the battery isn't a bad idea either.

My sawtooth's pram is still going strong. Never replaced it yet. Of course, I've shipped that mac to my dad...he uses it to play casino games and surf the web.
