Wireless or Ethernet? - graylocks - 04-08-2006

i'm about to migrate from my eMac to a mac mini.

the eMac is ethernet cabled to my router; the mac mini is wireless. once i migrate, is there any reason i would want/need the mini to be etherneted to the router rather than continuing with wireless?

No. If you were doing frequent transfers of large files between computers the answer would be yes, but you did not indicate that this was a factor. If you are going to have a wireless broadband connection with the mini, even 802.11b will be way faster than your broadband connection, so no problem there.

Are you going to use migration assistant? You will need a 6pin to 6pin firewire cable for this (I recommend it). Too bad migration assistant doesn't work over ethernet.

ethernet is always more reliable than wireless.

I can't really think of a good reason why a non-portable needs to be wireless other than it is way too far from being conveniently wired.

Exactly. That is what happened to me when I moved to my new place a few weeks ago. Where I put my desktop had no convenient place to put my cable modem. I just put the wireless router in a convenient place and connect with the airport extreme card in my desktop. Very convenient, and no connection problems whatsoever.

Same here. We have the DSL modem upstairs and the other machines are down. The eMac gets the DSL from an ethernet connection the inteliMac and the iBook connect wirelessly via Airport. That was one of the things I had to have in any new machine-wireless capability because I am not running wires down from upstairs.
