Do you think we'll have another dark age(s)? Or are we past that kind of stuff? - AAA - 12-23-2009 I kinda feel like so many people here are getting iPhones and LCD mega TVs, that we are due for a huge societal face plant. Discuss. ![]() Re: Do you think we'll have another dark age(s)? Or are we past that kind of stuff? - Doc - 12-23-2009 I don't think so. Not a dark age. It's not the tech. It's how it's used. Maybe a police-state. Cameras on every corner. Taxes on everything. Presumption of guilt. Like in England. Re: Do you think we'll have another dark age(s)? Or are we past that kind of stuff? - blooz - 12-23-2009 I'm not sure we've left the dark ages. Re: Do you think we'll have another dark age(s)? Or are we past that kind of stuff? - AAA - 12-23-2009 So, you think our energy source(s) will survive and be freely available to maintain either our current level of existence, or the current trend upward? And, no nuclear and/or biological or even extraterrestrial event will significantly set us back? Not trying to put words in your mouth, but at times it seems like we are almost a house of cards waiting to topple, to me, in some ways. Now, the 1984 Orwellian society angle...some of us are certainly THERE, now. But will that rule crumble first or be the only people to survive? Re: Do you think we'll have another dark age(s)? Or are we past that kind of stuff? - ztirffritz - 12-23-2009 Keep in mind that while Europe was in the 'Dark Ages' Asia was busy inventing all kinds of stuff that Europeans later adopted. They invented mathematical principals, algebra, calculus, '0', magnifying glass, telescopes, lots of metallurgy, medicine, etc. Several of the largest cities in the world were in Central and South America during this time. The 'Dark Ages' were only dark for Europeans. While I could see civilizations collapsing, I don't think it would happen to the entire planet. Maybe the USA would dissolve, or maybe there would be a revolution in Brazil that destabilizes South America but I don't think that EVERYTHING would go with it. I thought from the original post the question was whether there was a negative impact to going from "I need that" to "I want that" to "I want the newest version of that" Or was it that buying greater numbers of gadgets will run the Earth out of energy resources sooner? Or will ET or H1N1 get us first? So, apparently, for any number of reasons, the world is doomed! Live it up - live each day like it is your last. But your creditors might come looking for you before the world actually ends. Re: Do you think we'll have another dark age(s)? No. I don't think we're going to be set-back quite that far when the oil-crunch comes in a couple of years. I think politicians and big corporations are going to exploit it for all the fear, power and money they can squeeze from it, but we can and will adapt to the Re: Do you think we'll have another dark age(s)? Or are we past that kind of stuff? - N-OS X-tasy! - 12-23-2009 I've been pondering this question for years. My opinion? Our civilization's complete and total reliance on electricity makes us EXTREMELY vulnerable. Re: Do you think we'll have another dark age(s)? Lunch with the Klingons and then it's off to the holodeck for a little giggity giggity. And we'll all have flying cars too! ![]() Re: Do you think we'll have another dark age(s)? Until then, I'm going to work in front of my 30" Cinema Display an watch TV on my 42" LCD. |
