That is bad news... or good news, depending on your inclination. It's possible that a Republican could win Ted Kennedy's old seat in Mass. in the special election. If so, there goes the 60 votes needed. And Ben Nelson is hinting that he may change his mind... and there would go the 60 votes needed. It seems that there is a very real possibility that this could all fall apart even though it seemed like the biggest hurdles had been overcome by giving up the store comprising with Blue Dog Democrats.

Ted, it's not possible that a Republican will win the Senate seat in MA. It's being talked about on the bloviater shows as if it's now a possibility, but it is not. What the national party is concerned about is the margin of win for Coakley, as they see that as a harbinger of the mid-terms.

Polls since the televised debate put Brown slightly ahead as a protest vote more than anything.
He's still 2 points behind.

Even the Globe is dismissing her as a hack. That's not good.

Unfortunately I find myself in partial agreement with billb on this. Coakley has done the politically visible or expedient action during much of her career as DA and AG, and that has been noticed by many MA voters. Given that it is a special election, and voter turnout is expected to be light, Brown could pull it off. His negatives are not as well known. There were better candidates in the Democratic primary, but given the short time before that vote and its light turnout, many voted by name recognition.

I never said I liked Martha... but the fact is it's a "special election," meaning that it's the diehards who come out.. MA has not many true social conservatives (note that I didnt' say Republicans (but also true) since it's the unenrolled that will swing the election). She will win, it's just by how much and I agree that it could be "close" - for MA.

It's about time someone was talking about this instead of the "N word" or some other red herring. I want to know what the 'final version' is going to look like ! Remember.. the bills passed by Congress will NOT necessarily resemble the final bill to be signed by the President. What's happening now is below the radar for the American public, and where most of the tough decisions are truly being made.

I did it again. I actually wanted the thrust of the thread to be about the link I provided but thought I'd add a comment about a couple of other issues that could get in the way of a health care bill passing. So, in hopes of getting back to what I intended to be the main thrust of the thread I'll quote this from the link I provided in the OP:

Charlie Rangel says House/Senate negotiations are at an impasse. "We've got a problem on both sides of the Capitol. A serious problem," Charlie Rangel tells Roll Call. Another senior Dem says no progress has been made at all. And they probably won't have a bill for the president until February. This article in the AP confuses me even more, suggesting the negotiators may drop the mandate for large employers to provide coverage and some other points about the exchange system that don't even square with my understanding of the two underlying bills.

February? That's just asking for something to go wrong and the whole thing to fall through.

Aaaarrrgh!! We are inside a full-fledged healthcare disaster, the healthcare bill was already dying from a thousand cuts (not to mention the all out politically motivated sabotage by the republican party, and now this? It is simply irrational to want to kill healthcare reform. The people pushing the anti-healthcare propaganda are selfish a-holes. Those swallowing the propaganda are like children, unwilling to engage critical thinking skills. There is absolutely NO rational argument against healthcare reform as far as I can tell. The arguments that are brought up seem to all be based on falsehoods.

I agree but the not THIS kind of reform. Incidentally, can anyone explain what are insurance companies and big pharma doing throwing fundraisers for Coakley? How many rants have I read on this side against insurance companies and now you are in bed with them?
