OT: Fridge woes. Freezer seems to be working. But not fridge. =( - jdc - 01-16-2010

GE profile side-by-side, about 6 years old.

a week or so ago, it seemed as though the freezer was running non-stop, wasnt sure if it was just me -- plenty of stuff in it.

it seemed to go back to normal -- but now the fridge side is not staying cold

cranked the fridge to the highest possible setting and bumped the freezer up a couple of notches -- but no effect on the fridge side, still only semi-cold at best.

freezer is still running, everything is still frozen.

any ideas?

Well, we called a repairman once because our fridge wasn't working properly. He cleaned it. I'd strongly suggest you check for accumulated dust bunnies anywhere they might be prone to accumulate. I suspect the chances are low this is the problem, but the symptom does sound similar to what we were experiencing. Trust me - you don't want to call the repairman and have him clean for you. Sad (At least it was my husband who was home that day!)

Try reducing the freezer setting also.

the freezer side powers it - so clean in and out -- you could simply have a blocked vent to the fridge
or the controls aren't sliding them into proper position.

I'm no expert, but I know that much about them.

Plus cat food cans in the fridge--- that I'm an expert on.

There should be vents and fans to circulate the air from the freezer to the fridge compartment, make sure that nothing is blocking the airflow on both sides of the vents.

Could be that the circulation fan died, or maybe got jammed up with ice.

I've had a side-by-side that would behave like that about once a year especially in hot weather when it would be running more and just turning it off for several hours and letting any built up ice melt would get things back to normal.

Yeah, what they said. If the freezer works, the cooling system is fine, and the problem is that cold air is not getting from your fridge to your freezer. Either a circulating fan is busted or iced over, or something is blocking a duct.

I recently had this problem and it was the vents on the fridge side that were blocked by a jar of mayo.

This is generally a simple fix...could even be as simple as unblocking a vent between fridge and freezer. Go to Samurai Appliance repairman's site for troubleshooting steps: http://fixitnow.com/

One fan that does the circulation. They generally get pretty noisy before they die, but die they do. Checks vents, then the fan.

Well, it seems you have a consensus as to it being a blocked vent. Big Grin
