Why does Apple permit Microcenter to discount them so much? I thought "no discounts" was firm policy for Apple. (I'm not complaining; picked up a new (open box) Macbook from Microcenter last month for $719.)

Amazon discounts Apple hardware, too. If your big enough, Apple looks the other way these days, I guess. The little Apple Resellers of yesterday never discounted.

I'd wager most retailers don't want to have open box computers in stock, and so their contract lets them send them back. Hence, the refurbs at apple.com etc.
Microcenter, gotta love 'em but if you've ever been in one … is about one or two steps away from a flea market atmosphere. They probably don't mind selling through the open box stuff.
Don't forget these are "balance of warranty" items. Good prices nonetheless.

On the one that I bought the machine had never been booted up, let alone registered. So my "balance" was a full year beginning the day of my purchase.

just to be clear, the $800 and $1000 prices Sting posted are for new in the box never been opened Macs.

I just assisted my friend in getting a new Macbook at our local Apple Store.
They price matched Microcenters' $799.99 price, after a little "New Jersey-type" discussion.:bat:
