Fraud alert - testcase - 03-16-2010

I just got a renewal notice from Computer Trace Lojack. They advise:

"Renewal Notice: Your Subscription to LoJack for Laptops Expires in 30 Days!"

I started my ONE YEAR subscription on 10/16/2009. I have SEVEN MONTHS of my one year coverage remaining but, these clowns are trying to scam me. Lojack was one App I got in a macpromo offer.

I know other Forum members bought the macpromo deal. Watch out for these guys!

Sounds like magazine subscriptions. They start sending renewal notices 4 or 5 months into a 12 month subscription.

ClarkHoward.com says never, ever.

perhaps phishing; are you 100% positive the message is actually from Computer Trace Lojack?

just an evil idea that popped into my tiny brain

Re: Fraud alert - Doc - 03-17-2010

Are you sure that it wasn't a 6-month intro deal in the bundle?

Re: Fraud alert - testcase - 03-17-2010

OOPS!

Doc, you're right! I went back over the fine print. The deal was only for six months. I see it would only have covered up to $1000. My 17" MBP with the 3.06GHz processor, Matte screen, 7200 RPM HD and Apple Care totaled over $3000. They don't give you that good news up front. I'll pass on a renewal.

They help you locate the laptop if it's stolen. That's worth $40 bucks a year to many people.

They do not offer $1,000 "coverage" for your loss. The $1,000 that they go on about is their service-guaranty and is only part of the "premium" contract, which cost $20/year more than the regular subscription. If you go for the premium package and have followed the letter of their installation and reporting instructions and if you've maintained your account in good-standing and if the computer was stolen and if the computer has phoned home after being stolen and if they then can't locate it or remotely delete personal files for something like 60 days after that then you might qualify for up to $1,000. More likely the best you'll do is to get the price of the product back if you bitch enough.

The service has genuinely helped people recover their laptops. The premium contract and the $1,000 service guaranty may be BS, but the service itself is not a fraud.

If you want to keep it, but not pay $40/year, you can get a 3-year contract for $90.
