Best way to clean a window screen w/out removal? - Psurfer - 05-05-2010

any tips? This screen is getting clogged up on the outside (old spider webs, tree debris, etc). I'm thinking of using a brush or something to push the foreign stuff out from the inside...

watered down ammonia for mineral and dirt build up from rain.
I take them out though so they can be rinsed and dried with compressed air a bit quicker.
Pollen usually comes off with the vacuum cleaner.

Instead of a brush consider using a piece of old carpet wrapped around a block of wood.

Borrow a pressure washer from a neighbor? That plus the ammonia solution should work great.

Yes, the ideal would be if able to clean it from the inside.
It's a little hard to get to from outside, and it's one of those small cranked open types that doesn't have a lot of room to access the screen from the outside.

I may start w/a brush or broom -wish I had one w/small enough bristles to push through the screen, though- then, follow up w/a leaf blower...

Blow, then spray. I've actually used a garden hose run through the house in the past. Spray on a little ammonia, then hose 'er down with hot water.

The downside is that you end up with dirt stains on your siding.

I am curious, though. Most modern window screens are designed to be removed from inside the house. It often requires a bit of legerdemain to stick 'em back in , but it can be done.

I would just remove the screen, but it was painted-in long ago (w/oil paint), so this would make a project for me to fix cosmetically... and the weather's too darn nice for added work!
