Pointing iTunes to a different folder.
#1
You know how iPhoto will let you use a different folder for photos? You can hold option when starting the program, and it'll let you point to a different folder, or create a new library?

I'd like to do the same in iTunes, as I have a library stored on an external drive. I don't want to combine libraries; I just want to manage the songs in the second library for a bit.

Changing the iTunes folder changes the storage of new songs being imported, but doesn't give me access to the library on the external drive, which is what I'm looking to do.

Suggestions?

Or the really ghetto version is to rename your local iTunes folder (I use "iTunes local"), then have an alias "iTunes" pointing to your iTunes library on the external drive. Then rename them when you want to switch (I rename the alias "iTunes remote" and then rename the "iTunes local" folder back to "iTunes").

That's what I do, I don't do it that often which is why it works for me.

morlock: Thanks for the research!

gareth: Your way will work, as I'm only going to do this a few times. Otherwise, I'd go after morlock's suggestions.

jdc: Yes! It seems there's no built-in way to do this.

I have found this script so easy to use. Even if you are only using the external drive temporarily I would recommend this script highly:
