Quickbooks, Quicken and Church Record Keeping
#1
I have been asked to take over (what was a Quickbooks (PC)) account for the church.

I wouldn't count the money, just get a list of amounts donated and to what fund it goes. And expenditures, etc.

And write 6 checks a month, and make sure the taxes for the paid employees get sent to the Government.

I really don't want to do it. And these people that say its easy, I seriously doubt.

I just got rid of a job doing the treasurer for a Masonic Youth Girls organization., and that was quite a relief.

I am a Mac person. So I could install a Virtual PC program or PC OS on the Mac.

I understand that Quickbooks, has been moved to being online?, not sure.

Not sure what the church has been doing. Online vs In computer.

Is Quicken good enough, or will it have enough reports to satisfy the needs of a church. As it is like a small business, will I definitely need Quickbooks.

Is Quickbooks only for the PC?

Any experienced Financial people that use Quickbooks or ?, give me a glue on the learning curve and what I should do, or expect.

Quickbooks is far more capable than Quicken. I think it also has a payroll module.

Depending on the number of employees and the gross amounts withheld, you might have to file 941 forms with payments three days after every pay period. I think it's only once a quarter for a low number, though, as I would assume you have.

Is this a volunteer job? You might want to consider charging for your time.

The payroll thing is an issue. No way it is "easy." I would urge you to locate a service. Payroll services are quite inexpensive. The key is that they keep up on tax and benefit issues and changes made by federal, state, and local governments. Their systems make it cheap to do.

Intuit is taking the Adobe path to make Quickbooks a subscription. You can still get a perpetual license which you can search for. (The current version needs at least Yosemite.) Mac Quickbooks is a fine program and interchangeable with PC versions. But it is likely overkill for your needs. (Quickbooks is great if you need to invoice customers, track invoices, maintain financials, deal with lots of expenses of different sorts. Depositing donations, then writing 6 checks is an easy task for Quicken.)

Since it is established already on Quickbooks, it might be straightforward, but you would be inheriting any "chart of account" assumptions made by your predecessors. If you have any doubts, clean up may be more work that starting over.

This is a newer ONLINE version of ACS Technologiess Church Software. There is a set-up fee and a monthly fee that seems very reasonable to me. My church has the full blown version of this program and it is truly above what we need. They do have terrific customer service.

Worth a look!
