Have you hit up support? Brother got his replaced for the same issue.
Silly question but, how would I do that? Mine are out of warranty already.
How are the new (current) Air Pods?

Start with phone support, not chat -- act super nice, be pleasant and be a little "apple" stupid, with lots of "Im just not sure" "im really sorry for wasting your time on this, thanks" "I had no idea" "they were so awesome" etc, etc I have found that the sales peeps in Apple stores can also be very forgiving -- id go there first... if you have a apple store nearby, setup an appointment... and all the same advice above.

Doesn't BT add compression? Not that anyone under the age of 60 would notice since they are fine with MP3s.

My pet peeve with Apple buds, and most others as well, is they don't color code the ear pcs so you can easily tell which is L or R. I mark mine with a sharpie but it seems to fade out over time. Form over function at all costs seems to be the new Apple mantra.
