I'm a total new at scanning...

This is just a quick and dirty scan of a 4X6 print using all the presets that came with the Canon scanning software. I really need to learn how to properly scan negatives. What is the vertical white line on the right edge of the picture?

negatives are hard to scan no matter what. Just too small.

Proper sizing both physical and digital is the issue, perhaps a good place to start would be...

Okay, here's a scan of the negative at 2400 dpi. The color sure did seem to improve.

This scanning sure seems to be voodoo.

In the first image, I believe you're scanning an area larger than the image area, thus scanning the image plus a portion of the scanner bed. See if you can drag to select a smaller area before scanning.
