Auto Page Numbering By Sections/Chapters in Indesign 4... Anyone?
#1
I just received a nice template for a project I'm working on for a client (production work). I never really cared about auto numbering but the designer of the template setup nice auto-numbering in the mater page. The problem is that I can't figure out how to "reset" the numbering for each chapter. The numbering goes like this.

Chapter 1-1
Chapter 1-2
Chapter 1-3
Chapter 1-4
Chapter 2-1
Chapter 2-2
Chapter 3-3

Ect.

Right now it just keeps numbering everything 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-52, etc.

Is there an easy way to "reset" the numbers without creating new master pages? The reason I ask is that I have 180 chapters / sections. I'm reading and watching lots of tutorials but just can't figure out what I need to figure out.

Manually renumbers isn't horrible but would like to see if I can be more efficient.

Thanks.

You want the Pages palette and from there the "Numbering & Sections Options" from the palette's drop down menu. That will let you go to a page and restart the numbering and set the chapter prefix you want. Search the InDesign Help system for "numbering and sections" and you'll get more details.

Yes, in the Pages panel, when you look at the page thumbnails you should see some with little inverted triangles above them. Those pages are where each new section begins. If you control-click on one, you'll see a Numbering/Sections window appear, in which you can redefine the section's attributes or even delete the section. Repeat as needed.

Hi, I signed up just to reply here. I had the same problem and it drove me crazy - all 20 chapters were resetting pages to 1, whereas the day before all page numbers were perfect.

What I must have inadvertently done was hit the quick key for preferences because the first item under general in CS4 (on PC) is 'page numbering' view. Mine had changed from 'section numbering' to 'absolute numbering' without realizing. To fix it, all I had to do was change back to 'section numbering'.

Hope that helps someone!
