Is it functional at all without either the Apple earbuds or a remote adapter/dongle?

I haven't even opened the box yet, but I'm sure I wouldn't get much if I tried to sell it (to upgrade).

I also hated the third gen shuffle. My suggestion all along was to take the second gen and add voiceover. Clearly I was not alone with my distaste.

I liked my 2nd gen shuffle but LOVED my 1st gen shuffle. Now I regret giving them away.
