For $100 its a slam dunk, get the Macbook.

Macbook will be MUCH faster.

Will hold its value MUCH better. This will be offset to some degree by buying refurbed so for a $400 savings I would consider the older model.

If its not a hardship I would still lean towards the Macbook.

I will disagree with others here. The $700 is a decent deal.

However, that being said, the performance of the ibook G4 is only so-so. I have one, and I wish it's faster sometime. It will be tough for the ibook to last 4 years... The HD is fairly small, only 40 GB, and she can fill up with music very quickly.

That being said, if your daughter is not going to school until the fall, why don't she just wait to buy the computer closer to when school starts? She may want to wait and see what her school recommends, or if they will have some kind of bundle that will be a good deal.
