ISO: the best roadside assistance service
#21
I haven't used it yet, but Progressive's Roadside Assistance costs me $5 every six months:

Of course, you have to insure your car with Progressive too to get this.

As most of you know, I'm a single female and I cover 4 states for work. All my travel is by car and AAA has been great.

When I slid off the road into a ditch a couple years ago, I was on the phone with an agent when an enterprising tow truck driver appeared in front of me (there were about 20 other cars in the ditch as well- black ice.) Even though it wasn't an AAA affiliated company, they authorized the tow over the phone and I was reimbursed the full amount.

Last week when I was in Indiana, I left my lights on when I got to my hotel. When I went to my car a few hours later, it was dead, of course. I had a jumpstart within 20 minutes.

I pay for the higher level service so I can get towed up to 100 miles. Worse comes to worse, I'd just have them take me to the nearest Honda dealer.

The hotel discounts are nice, too!

I used AAA this past Sunday night, took less than a hour for the guy to get to me. Flatbed truck, even for my RWD car which I appreciated. Driver was blasting the jamz on the way back to my place but it was a free ride home anyway. I got to wondering how many intoxicated people have used AAA to tow their cars home from the bar and get a free ride at the same time?

Roadside assistance, travel/entertainment/retail discounts, free maps, travel guides, and DMV services. AAA is worth it for all that. Good customer service also. Once I went to an auto shop needing an emergency repair, and the owner told me that they didn't give AAA discounts. After I got the car back, I found out on the AAA website that the shop is supposed to give AAA discounts. Called the shop and was still given a bunch of b.s. I complained to AAA, and the next day an agent went to the shop and called me from there to confirm my credit card number so the owner could credit me my discount. The a-hole owner never apologized, but I got the last laugh because the AAA agent put the shop on probation. This shop had gotten a good rating on Yelp, which doesn't say much obviously.

Family members and friends gave the high rate.
