MacBook Air Dead and Fan is Running
#1
Wife opened her Air (newer model) today and was greeted by a blank screen and a noise that we determined was a fan in the left rear part of the machine. Holding the power key down does not make the fan shut off and we have not been able to get it to light the screen. We don't know if any applications are running. I've had it plugged in for several hours thinking that maybe the battery was too discharged to boot but that didn't work.

Any suggestions before we get a Genius Bar appointment?

Try this:

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Could wife have started the Shut Down cycle and then, before the computer had time to shut down properly, she closed the lid? I did that once on a Sony Vaio and damned near cooked the laptop. Apparently, if Shut Down is begun but, not allowed to finish, inducing Sleep can bollux up the works. Said laptop neither Shuts Down completely or properly goes to sleep but, keeps "working" now with the lid closed severely limiting air flow. Luckily, I happened to check on my Vaio about an hour later, it was incredibly hot. Had I let it go overnight, I can see how it might have started a fire.

Tried resetting the SMC which did turn off the fan and the Apple logo light on the lid. Took it to Apple store in San Antonio yesterday. They determined that there was a very faint video image. They said it was a bad display or bad motherboard. We left it for warranty repair.
