What is this lunatic talking about? Ftp: 162 connections?
#1
Webhostbuzz.com has some kind of ftp connectivity issues. Every time I upload to the server, they temporarily block my access. The say that I have too many user connections. I was using Panic Software's "Coda" ftp client initially in "passive" mode.

The next time, I tried uploading using Dreamweaver in "passive" mode as well.

Before I royally cuss this dude out, am I doing something wrong?

Blocking of your IP address means that only you are deprived of the access to your site, while the rest users can still browser it. You can not worry about it.

Please check your client software, set the passive mode and the limitation on 50 connections maximum for your FTP client. If you do not know how to do it please consult the FTP client documentation.

We have unblocked your IP.

Feel free to contact us in case of any further troubles.

Ask them to reboot the server.

So don't.

First I have to get them to not feel so confident that I'm the problem.

But Seacrest, they block it even before my upload is completed.

Webhostbuzz is piggybacking on comcast. Someone (WHB?) is using DHCP to assign addresses, and not cleaning up their logs when an IP address is reassigned.

Also note that Comcast uses Sandvine to kill upload traffic (sending RST (reset) packets downchannel to connections that cross some arbitrarily set, undocumented threshold).

I would be looking for a static IP address and a new hosting service, possibly in that order.

Do you know what "Transmit Turbo" is?

It's built into Coda. It's a technique used to accelerate file-uploads. It apparently does so by opening hundreds of simultaneous connections.

I don't know that you can turn it off. I don't use Coda. If you can't turn it off in the pref's, consider using a different program for your uploads.

Thanks TheCaber. Interesting. I just got this message back from them (from Moscow it seems):

Dear Customer,

In case your FTP client use thread option and opens a lot of connection to our server your IP address would be blocked by our firewall. Please make sure that the thread option turned off. In case of any further troubles don't hesitate to contact us.

MacMagus, I think that was the problem. I don't see any way to turn off the Turbo feature. I'm using the demo, so I think I'll hunt some other ftp client that behaves better. Dreamweaver uploaded just fine and I didn't get blocked.

Not trusting Comcast though.

Hi, I'm from Panic. I just want to clarify some things because 3+ years later, people seem to be finding this discussion via Google.

Transmit Turbo is just the marketing name we gave to Coda's faster (at the time) file transfer engine. There is no file acceleration going on and, in itself, it has nothing to do with how many connections are used.

The problem is simply that Coda (version 1.7 and earlier) doesn't have a preference for limiting connections like Transmit does. If you drag over 100 files in Coda, it uses 100 connections. Simple as that. A future version of Coda will have a connection limiting pref.

If you have questions, please email coda@panic.com for support.
