Exchanging an iPad - sales tax question
#1
I'm thinking of purchasing an iPad 2 at a Target in Delaware. I opened a Target "Red Card" (their credit card), and can thus save 5% on the sale price of the iPad 2. By purchasing it at a Target in Delaware (I live 25 minutes away in Philly), I can save by not paying sales tax, either.

Total savings will be about $80. Not bad.

Problem is, the Target stores in Delaware haven't had the particular model (32GB, AT&T, black) I'm interested in in stock. They *do* have the white version.

So my question is: If I were to purchase the model I want in white, saving on sales tax. Could I take it--unopened--to a Target in the Philly area and exchange it for the black version without being hit with the sales tax? Or do you think they would do they do a return and make me purchase it again?

I bet they'd return it and make me purchase the new one.

you could skip the 5% Target discount and buy from the Apple store at the Christiana Mall...

I think they would make you return and repurchase, because it isn't an exact exchange, different SKU and all.

I hate target for returns.

ALways have had trouble with them.

Yes I know. I have receipts, Unopened box, etc.

But for me, Target has been the worst.

I would guess they are wise to the maneuver, and will charge sales tax, especially so close to the DE border. You're probably not the first person to try to beat sales tax that way. Remember it's not their tax, it's a state law, and they could get in trouble for not collecting it. No way are they going to take the fall down on your behalf!

I bought a car in Ohio while living in PA, not for sales tax reasons, but because that's where the car I wanted was. I thought for a second I might pay the lower sales tax, but they had it all figured out.

I would say that, as you have guessed, they would process a return of your white iPad and credit your Target card account, and then you would have a new purchase transaction of the black iPad, which would be taxable at that location.

Have you asked an employee at the store where you want to purchase if they can give you any information on when they might have the model you want in stock, or to scan the inventories of the other Delaware stores to see if they have any in stock?
