Just bought a used ipad - 3g service?
#1
Would I have to go to att for 3g service or are other options open now via hacking?

It's the original model - 16GB (for $290 shipped - good deal?)

They are unlocked, but I doubt T-Mobile will be any better.

ATT charges month to month $15 for 250MB and $25 for 2GB with $10 for every extra GB, all with no contract. I think you can do partial months pro rated--not sure.

If you have an iPhone you can do 2GB of tethering for $20 month to month on the iPhone $25 data plan.

Well, the 3G service works now for GPS/location services - at no cost - so if you have that enabled then you have a nice GPS unit or any software that would utilize location.

The ATT plans that you pay for are for 30 days, period. No pro-rate/partioal months if you don't use it but only one time for that 30-day period.

I did not realize that there were no 2 year contracts - nice!

Remember that the iPad uses the odd micro SIM card. So you'd probably have to cut up a regular T-Mobile SIM to get it to fit.

And, T-Mobile uses different frequencies from AT&T for 3G. My guess is the iPad does not support the T-Mobile 3G frequencies, so you'd be limited to the very slow EDGE data speeds.

I think it does support the European 2100 MHz 3G networks, so you could use a European SIM in an iPad when traveling abroad (again, if you cut it down to micro SIM size).

Good luck.
