Owl & Kestrel pictures
#1
I moved out to the suburbs about 18 months ago and that placed me right on the American river. Wonderful for walks and nature watching and MUCH closer than my old stomping grounds - the wildlife preserve between Sacramento and Davis.

BUT I haven't seen an owl, but once very briefly near dark and I haven't seen a Kestrel at all in close to two years. These are two of my favorites - so Saturday, while the river parks are PACKED with holiday partiers that scare the wildlife away, I decided to drive out to my old stomping grounds to find owls and kestrels. I found one owl and two kestrels - pretty good for being out of touch with the area for so long.

After some stomping around, I suddenly felt a pair of eyes on me... funny how owl eyes are so creepy when they are watching you...

Chased this guy around a small grove of trees, but couldn't get anything better than these... still, I consider this a good day - I found what I was looking for...

Kestrel's are very cool little raptors... about the size of a bluejay, but they are pure hunter/killer. Their badass attitude reminds me of Foghorn Leghorns little sidekick. I nickname them 'chicken hawks'...

I still have more yosemite/vogelsang pictures to post... this week - promise...

The Owl's eyes remind me of cat eyes.
