MacBook Pro repair?
#1
A friend has a MBP that is pre-magsafe and apparently the power connector on the logic board is busted. I imagine this means the only fix is a logic board replacement, right? They said it was purchased in 2006.

i'm not certain, but a number of models have a dc power board which would be a much cheaper replacement than a full logic board

You mean a PowerBook? As all MBP's are magsafe. As mattkime says, I believe most models have a separate DC board (sometimes combined with a USB port), although getting to that board can be a huge PITA, depending on the model (i.e. 12" ).

Hmm, I'll have to figure out which it is then. They said it was a MBP from '06 but if they all had magsafe then something doesn't mesh.

There are two designs of magsafe connectors for MBPs; one (older, white) feeds the cord perpendicular to the frame, the other (newer, silver) has the cord parallel. The older connector is known to be suspect. I suggest you check the machine with a newer magsafe to see if it's the power cord rather than the logic board socket.

all Macbooks and Macbook Pros have MagSafe.

If it IS a Powerbook - it's doable. I replaced the DC in board on a 1 ghz 17" pb a couple years ago. I found the take apart guide online, and it turned out to be a simple job (I think it took under an hour).
