Our cell phone plan lets us locate the phones on it for $5/mo (actually $3.75/mo after corp discount), plus there's an option to add others that opt in for an additional monthly fee per person added. It would be nice[r] to have an app as you describe that provides a birds eye view of color coded, GPS based, pins on a map that uses the handheld devices built in compass to keep the relative pin positions accurate. And it should work when the other people's devices are turned off. Some sort of friendlier pricing would be nice; some months we only use the locator service once or twice, and it feels expensive... at around six or seven locates it seems worth it.
